Cannabis: Irresponsibly listed in Schedule I

Cannabis is a 37 million year old botanical which was placed in the most restrictive Schedule under a UN Treaty in 1961 and in 1970 was placed in the most restrictive Schedule in the United States (using the terms "Marihuana" and "Tetrahydrocannabinols").  At the time of these severely restrictive scheduling placements, Cannabis was in use in many parts of the world in both medical and non-medical context.
